Hi everyone!
I haven't blogged in a while because I haven't had much to say so brace yourselves! There's a lot of good info here and I hope it helps anyone who might be struggling with weight issues especially with the Holidays upon us.
If you follow me on the regular or are customers of mine you probably know I've recently embarked on a new addition to my "health vending" business. After meeting Don (hempIOS) in California 3 years in a row, I finally decided to dig deeper into the CBD craze that claims to be miraculous at healing everything from aches and pains to epilepsy and beyond.
Not a believer in fad diets, (diets at all) or anything that claims to be a quick fix, I not only believe in these products because I've personally seen good results but I also know that they are top quality and organic. So I became a distributor.
These products are intended to be used as dietary supplements as many "health enhancing" products are. Now, here's where it can get a little tricky so pay attention!
No one (at least not me or Don) is claiming these products WILL heal, cure, etc...
Everyone has endocannabinoid receptors in our bodies. When we are depleted due to everyday stress, whether it be emotional, financial, environmental or what have you, physical ills start to take hold because immunity becomes comprised and fat piles on due to increased levels of cortisol. CBD oil products have been shown to help decrease anxiety, inflammation etc...
If steps are taken to decrease everyday stress then the chances of certain supplements being beneficial become greater. Contrarily, if measures are not put into place, the chance of anything working decreases. Because in our human bodies everything is interconnected.
So for example, if you are taking CBD products to decrease inflammation but you're eating 3 times the amount of sugar daily than is necessary, there's a good chance the CBD oil is not going to work and you're gonna be like, "this is crap!" Just like if you're working out 3 times a day but eating 4 times as much, you're not going to lose weight!
The connection between stress and weight gain IS real! But understand one thing. Poor eating habits can also be a STRESSOR on your system. Lack of exercise can be a STRESSOR on your system just as too much exercise can also be a STRESSOR!
It's all about balance which is the primary studied response of the CBD oils. Homeostasis or balance of our internal operating system (IOS). But.. you can order all the most popular CBD oil in my store and I hope you do, but until you realize all steps to a healthier IOS need to be in place, CBD, ABC or XYZ is not going to work! At least not as is intended.
So, I'm challenging you during this Holiday season to not use "the Holidays" as an excuse to eat bad, get less sleep (another major factor) and run around like a chicken or turkey with its' head cut off. I hate that saying by the way!
Instead, follow these basic rules and you'll begin to notice, maybe slowly but definitely surely, a change. Weight will start drop. The body will start to feel better, etc...

"CHEAT" meals, "MIRACLE" diets and "FAD" exercise programs-Why they don't work. VARIETY & CONSISTENCY
I've addressed these subjects before, but with a new product, diet and exercise program popping up every 10 seconds, I think it's worth revisiting. When I first opened my studio 12 years ago I knew I would never get rich from what I do for a living. In fact, I spend most of my money on continuing education to bring my clients the best quality workouts and factual information. My job is my passion and vice versa. My clients know the authenticity of what I give them on a daily basis. One of my strongest passions is to shed light on current "trends", "diets", and workout programs that claim to burn 40 million calories in 30 minutes. I'm sorry to be so blunt but I'm here to tell you-NOT!
Let's take it one subject at a time.
First: "CHEAT MEALS"- Everyone who's on a "diet" and a mission to lose a certain amount of weight thinks they can cheat once in awhile. Labeling something like this as a "cheat" meal can set you up for failure because your mindset is focused on short-term. "I'm going to lose umpteen pounds and then go back to eating ice cream and cake." When in fact if you're adopting LIFE time, consistent, healthy eating habits that you think of as fueling your body for its' specific needs you can actually have your cake and eat it too.
Determine your goals. If you eat consistently with your long-term goals in mind, you'll develop a healthier relationship with food. Any so-called "diet" or new "miracle healthy" fat-loss program implies deprivation. And no one can survive under deprivation for a life-time. So if you'd like to be at a certain weight and body-fat, determine what makes you happy and feel good. Not what someone else looks like or claims. Then you fit in whatever foods you like within reason from time to time without feeling guilty.
Next: "BURN up to 1,000 calories in 30 minutes!" And, "It's all about the AFTER BURN!" Sound too good to be true? It is. And here's why. For one thing, everyone burns fat and calories differently at different rates depending on your height, weight and gender. Secondly, if you're working at sub-level capacity for 30 minutes and Joe-Shmoe is working at his maximum capacity, you can bet your ass Joe Shmoe will burn a significant more amount of calories than you.
30 minute HIIT workouts are great! I use them all the time in my classes but if we apply the same principles to those above like with the eating habits, it turns out to be the same thing. You can't physically do challenging enough 30-minute workouts to continue to burn fat on a regular basis without injuring yourself at some point. And again, it can be difficult to work at your full capacity during these very intense workouts which means you're wasting your time and money! You'll see results in the beginning just as anything else, then boredom, injury, and repetition will set in, causing your body to be UN challenged nd the workout well...stops working!
That is why I change up my workouts for my clients continually. If we spend a certain amount of time doing HIIT workouts, you can bet I'm going to throw in some steady state routines for awhile too. And building lean muscle from all different types of workouts is what really keeps you burning calories for a short time, after your workout. And how long and how much you burn AFTER your workout is also subjective. Everyone is different and responds differently. So don't fall for these outrageous claims!

3 Reasons Why You're Not Losing Weight
1: Overestimation of calorie burn. Machines at the gym can be as much as 40% INaccurate! So if you've just spent the past hour on an elliptical and it says you burned 700 calories don't think you can go have an ice cream sundae. Chances are, that sundae is going to do some serious damage to your weight loss efforts and be well over the 700 calories which you thought you burned!
2: Underestimation of how many calories you're actually eating. If you taste everything you're cooking or lick cake batter out of the pan, you can easily pack on extra calories without thinking about it. And usually, unless you're a pro at measuring your food by sight, you will most likely overdo it. If you read food labels the recommended portions are typically very small but often all we need to consume.
3: Muscle vs. Fat loss: The is a big one ladies! At around age 20 (yep, that young!!) your metabolism starts to decrease (muscle mass decreases) by about 1-2% per decade. While that may seem like no big deal, it means you'd have to eat about 150 calories less per day at age 30 to be the weight you were at age 20. So imagine what happens at age 40, 50 and above! While it's not the only answer, strength training is the most helpful component of exercise to combat this effect. The more lean muscle you have, the more fat you're able to burn. Muscle is extremely metabolically active which means it can burn fat even while you're at rest. So is that hour on the treadmill or elliptical a waste of time? Well, kind of. While cardio exercises are important for overall cardiovascular health and burning calories. Only a combination of cardio and strength will accelerate fat loss and keep you burning well after your workouts. Too much cardio is going to eat that muscle away.

EXCUSES?
As a studio owner, I've been asked on occasion what I do for work. The inference being, "do you have a full-time job?" Without getting into the logistics of what it actually takes 24 hours a day 7 days a week to run a business in order to make sure it keeps running (12 years now, thanks), I will say that one of the perks that comes with my job is not having to answer to anyone else. So is my time a little more flexible than those working in an office environment or punching a clock? Sure. Does that give those of you clock punchers an excuse to miss a workout? It does if you really are o.k. with the 5, 10, 20 or more pounds you've put on over the past decade. And as I've said in some older posts, I truly mean that. No judgment. If that is, in fact, THE TRUTH. But as a fitness professional, I hear complaints and concerns about people's weight issues on a daily basis. And those same people are usually the ones with the most excuses. Many of those people are dedicated employees who would never miss a day of work. So why do you miss a "work" out?
Those of you that know me personally, know I'm a super compassionate, understanding, non-judgmental person but when it comes to eating right and working out, I don't buy the excuses. Sorry. I don't buy the too busy with my kids excuse. Or, the too much on my plate with work, kids, and home excuse. Or even the I don't feel well excuse. Why? Because all of those things are valid reasons and priorities. Your health should be too. It should be added to your list of the above mentioned. If not, then it's just an excuse. It's as simple as that.
And the best news of all is...You do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT need to spend hours in a gym to get a great workout. Exercise can be cumulative (10 minutes here, 10 minutes there) throughout the day or depending on intensity, can be done in 20-30 minutes 3-5 times per week with amazing results! You don't need a gym at all!
In my class yesterday, we did a high intensity, low impact workout hitting every major muscle group for a total of 35 minutes non-stop including warm-up and cool down! It was a sweat-fest and fitbits were clocking in at over 200 calories burned. What's even more of a benefit is that the type of workout we did, helps keep up your burn 24 hours AFTER your workout is over.
There are myriad ways to incorporate exercise and I've listed them in many other posts. inexpensive home equipment, etc... So excuses? That's where my compassionate self ends. And if you're feeling like a truck ran you over and/or you have a fever, absolutely rest and do not work out. But if you're feeling sluggish or have a sniffle, trust me when I tell you, you WILL feel better after you work out. Working out with a sniffle is not going to make you worse. It actually helps build your immune system.
Proper nutrition has to be in line, however, in order to gain maximum benefits and feel great. But THAT excuse making is for a future blog.
For today, GET MOVING!! NO EXCUSES!!
Best,
Robyn
